Drunkit needs YOUR help

Drunkit is in financial difficulty.

We have one of three options:

a. Help Matt raise the £70 needed to keep Drunkit free and going for another year.
b. Put some form of advertisement on the site and hope that it raises £70 for Drunkit for another year.
c. Don't put any money in and not have Drunkit any more

Basically, I have to pay £70 by January 5th 2004. I cannot realistically afford this. As much as I would like to pay for Drunkit again, I have personally paid for it for over four years now - including putting in 90% of the work and 100% of the money. I simply cannot afford to do this any more.

How can we help?
  • By putting in £5 you can really help keep Drunkit alive.
  • £10 will almost certainly guarentee a new Drunkit
  • £20 will Decidedly rescue Drunkit
Before you dismiss this as a plea for money, let me put it to you in these terms:

First of all, I have never asked for money before. All of Drunkit has been paid for out of my own pocket. This includes the original £100 set up fee. I have never asked, nor recieved any form of profit or income from Drunkit, nor do I wish to make one.

Secondly, £10 is 60p a week. You spend more than that on a single drink in Mission on a Sunday. If you've been visiting Drunkit since the start (about four years now), that's 5 pence a day. On the assumption you visit three times a day, that's just over two pence for every visit - which probably brings you joy.

Thirdly, many people rely on Drunkit to keep talking to their friends etc. The scope is wider than the regular members. Many non-active people visit Drunkit frequently. They deserve a say too.

On these points, I hope you will find compassion in the need for Drunkit to continue. This is not sudden and indeed you may wish to bestow some money on Drunkit as a Christmas present.

If you think you can get hosting for cheaper than £70 a year (which is very reasonable), that's fantastic. However, Drunkit must have:
  • At least 5gb bandwidth a month
  • At least 200mb disk space
  • The ability to have 50+ subdomains
  • Full CGI (Perl 5+) Scripting and full PHP (4.1.2+) support
  • At least five databases (MySQL strongly prefered)
  • Full access control via ftp (ssh/telnet desired, but not required)
  • IMAP (or, less desirably) POP3 email support -- with the ability to include at least 10 accounts (preferably more)
  • A UNIX based sever running Apache
I do not need SSL security, although it'd be a bonus. The current service we subscribe to is the WebConexion.net UK bronze hosting package. However, they have increased their prices, but their US Hosting is competitively priced and looks attractive. It also included all the required features.

Essentially, if you think you can help please, please, please reply here stating how much you can help by. If you know a cheaper/comparable hosting solution, please tell me. I am keen to stick with this company for now, as their service has been very good. But if cheaper can be found, that takes priority.

Thanks for reading this and I hope you can find it to support Drunkit. Even if you cannot afford to support Drunkit in this way, I thank you for taking the time to read this.

With that attitude, it's certainly not gonna last very long!

I wouldn't mind paying a fiver a year. It's only a fiver - it doesn't make that much difference and I think most people would be willing to pay that. I think most people would not be willing to pay £10 a year.

Then Drunkit will probably not come back :)

Why not?

There are currently 17 listed members and 14 of those I recognise and think they might pay £5, that is £70.

Or if everyone contributed £7 that is £98.

That's enough to pay the hosting fee and keep it going, then we could have an advertisment or two on the site to help raise some extra funds.

Only thing is, do the advertisers only pay people who have a lot of hits on their websites?

I'm in for a fiver. Its not a lot and I'd spend three times as much on a night out - and I think drunkit is worth it. If everyone chips in just a fiver then it would be enough to keep it going.

I'm not having a go at anyone, but if the top right corner of your browser says "Welcome -xyz-" then you come here enough to chip in a fiver at least, and shame on you if you won't.

Just came across your site after looking around a few premium lager sites ;)
At £70 a year for what you need it sounds a bit expensive,
Id be happy to host you for nothing :)

So what's the deal? I'll happily pay £5 a year, but not if this Jim dude does it for free!

Matt, if you need a few squid, tell us how to hand it over!
