THE DUSTBIN FINAL
One newspaper described this as the "dustbin final" following disgraceful scenes as Blackburn supporters
showered Stan Cullis and his players with orange peels, apple cores, plastic cups and general rubbish as they
made their way down the Wembley tunnel with the FA Cup. Even the band out on the pitch attempted to play
louder than ever hoping to drown out the background of the protesting voices. Why?
The Blackburn followers were outraged when referee Kevin Howley allowed a Wolves goal, and more so
when full-back David Whelan fractured his leg minutes before half-time with Blackburn 1-0 behind.
Wolves had annoyed the crowd with their hard and sometimes too physical tackling (a fault that Rovers shared
to the end). But football is a man's game and Wolves gave as good as they recieved.
Their opening goal on 41 minutes was a gift, conceded by Rovers' left-half Mick McGrath. The Blackburn winghalf
slid the ball past his own keeper after Barry Stobart had sold a dummy to Bray, the Rovers full-back. Halfway
through the second half Norman Deeley notched a second, running the ball home after som fine wing-play by
outside left Des Horne.
And then Stobart set up number three for Deeley two minutes from time, the little "midget" almost lifting the roof
straight out of the net with a cracking right-foot shot. Ron Flowers and Jimmy Murray both had goals disallowed
in a final which left a lot to be desired!
