Swindon announce new stadium plan
Swindon Town Football Club are to move to a new 23,000-seater stadium.
Previous plans for a stadium in Swindon's Front Garden fell through three years ago because the club failed to secure the finances.
The site of the proposed stadium will be announced at Monday. Possible sites are near the Honda factory and near junction 15 of the M4.
The new stadium will replace the ageing County Ground which has been home to the club since 1896.
The current ground is owned by the town council, and rent payments have often proved a problem for the club.
At a recent fans' forum, the club's chief executive assured fans the new stadium would be inside the town boundaries.
Another site under consideration is the Shaw tip near Sparcells in West Swindon.
The new stadium will include a hotel and a gym which would add to the club's revenues.
It will be built by developers St Modwen, the same company who built Stoke City's Britannia Stadium.
If the club are successful in gaining planning permission from Swindon Borough Council quickly, the stadium could be in use by the 2007/2008 season
