At lunchtime today, in the Halcrow lunchtime 6-a-side cricket competition, the Water Resources Department team came to fruition and beat MIS (computer people) with 2 balls remaining.
We won the toss and elected to bowl first, so we had a target to aim at. My over was uneventful - a few cheeky singles but no boundaries, so at least the run rate was low.
They scored 53 runs from our 5 overs - not a massive total given we had scored over 70 in previous games, though still a challenging total given the prowess of the MIS bowling attack.
Our bastmen survived the onslaught of the first over from their big Indian bowler who looked very quick. The other 4 bowlers were not so frightening, and with 1 over remaining we had 4 wickets in hand and needed 13 runs. From the first 4 balls, four fours were hit, bringing the prestigious trpphy to our department for the first time in memory!
We now have a bat with 'Water Resources' waiting to be engraved on it, and a 'comical' set of stumps as a trophy.
This is one of the most amazing victories of my sporting career, ranking alongside beating Churchfields in year 9 with Mr Battye as manager!
